While long-term solutions continue to evolve, many organisations are looking for practical technologies that can deliver improvements today using their existing fleets.
A recent field trial of the HYDI Hydrogen Injection System demonstrates how hydrogen-assisted combustion can deliver measurable fuel savings and emissions reductions in real-world operating conditions.
The system was tested over seven months on a Volvo 700hp Euro 5 prime mover operating in remote mining transport conditions across a demanding 670 km haul route. The trial compared baseline vehicle performance with continuous HYDI operation, using two independent fuel measurement systems to verify results.
Across more than 71,000 km of operation, the trial recorded:
- Fuel savings of 11–12%
- 29 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided
- Independently verified results from dual measurement systems
HYDI is an on-demand hydrogen injection system that enhances diesel combustion efficiency without requiring engine modifications or vehicle replacement. The system can typically be installed in around one day and immediately begins improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.
For mining and heavy transport operators looking to reduce operating costs and improve sustainability performance, the results demonstrate a practical pathway to improving fleet efficiency using existing assets.
